Jews have been deeply involved in the American democratic experiment since before our nation’s founding. Democratic ideals of freedom, equality, and popular sovereignty have long guided and inspired America’s Jews. Yet the Jewish community has seldom spoken in a unified voice about how best to achieve or apply these ideals. Each new challenge has sparked fresh debate over policy, values, and priorities. Through eras of war, peace, prosperity, and privation, rifts have emerged and alliances have shifted, but Jews have remained united in their pursuit of the promise of American democracy. All We Have Standing Between Us brings together fourteen contemporary scholars to reflect on the complex relationship between Jews and democracy across seven key periods in American history.
The American Jewish Historical Society’s companion podcast will take listeners through key moments in U.S. history for audiences beyond New York and around the globe. Coming July 2026.
All We Have Standing Between Us is made possible thanks to generous funding from the Leon Levy Foundation. Additional funding is provided by the Knapp Family Foundation, the Achelis and Bodman Foundation, the Atran Foundation, and Anonymous.
