Novi Kolos

Translated into Serbo-Croatian by Snežana Žabić

In Yugoslavia after World War II, my grandparents were young rural migrants with brand new jobs at the Borovo shoe factory. The same factory would employ my parents until it was destroyed, along with Yugoslavia, in 1991. I spent my twenties moving from country to country, hoping for stability. Now in my forties, I’ve been living in Chicago since 2005, and I’ve made peace with the fact that stability is elusive for grandchildren of rural migrants.

Snežana Žabić is the author of the short story collection In a Lifetime (KOS, Serbia, 1996), the hybrid memoir Broken Records (punctum books, USA, 2016), and the poetry collections Po(eat)ry (written with Ivana Percl and published by SKC NS, Serbia, 2013) and The Breath Capital (New Meridian Arts, USA, 2016).

Ni slična slavi mjedenog grčkog diva
Što uzjaši zrak nad ulazom u luku;
Uz naša vrata žena uzdiže ruku
S bakljom gdje je munja zatočena živa,
Žena zvana Majka Prognanih. Priziva
Svijet signalom dobrodošlice, u oku
Joj naredba zraku da k’o most u skoku
Spoji dva grada. “Drevne zemlje, svu svoju
Raskoš čuvajte; pompa nek živi kod vas!
Meni dajte umornu, zbijenu raju!”
Sa bakrenih usana odjekuje glas.
“Beskućnicima, bačenim u oluju,
Pokraj zlaćanih vrata pružam svjetla spas!”
