Translated into Uzbek by Hamid Ismailov

“Life in exile! May it be cursed. Once you have become a stranger, a stranger you shall remain; you may endeavour to make friends, but the task is a difficult one, full end to end with uncertainty.I am a stranger at home, and I am nobody abroad. It is boundlessly difficult to be a stranger. Your usual ways of behaving bear no fruit: If your habits are not fit for purpose, you might as well be a wheel of its axle, alone over and over again. What had the Stranger sought, and what had he found?” (from Ismailov’s novel Of Strangers and Bees)

Born in 1954 in Tokmok, Kyrgyzstan, Hamid Ismailov is an award-winning Uzbek poet and writer who was forced to flee Uzbekistan in 1992 due to what the state dubbed ‘unacceptable democratic tendencies’. His works are banned in Uzbekistan.
