2022 Emma Lazarus Statue of Liberty Award Recipient

Nita Lowey was born in the Bronx, attended and graduated from the elite Bronx High School of Science, and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Mount Holyoke College. She served as Assistant Secretary of State for the State of New York before being elected to Congress.

The New York Times has described Lowey as “courageous,” while Newsday described her as “terrific,” and the New York Daily News as one of “New York’s key Members of Congress.” The Journal News deemed Lowey “one of the most influential Members of Congress,” a sentiment mirrored in the Congressional Quarterly, which called her one of the 50 most effective Members of Congress, able to maneuver “skillfully through the appropriations process.” The Boston globe dubbed her a leader who “speaks of the world’s victimized women and children as if they were voters in her district.”

Lowey was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1988, and broke glass ceilings as she achieved milestones as a woman, a New Yorker, and Jewish Member of Congress. In 2001 and 2002 she served as the first woman and the first New Yorker to chair the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Lowey was the first woman to lead either party on the House Appropriations Committee as Ranking Member from 2013 to 2018; and, in 2019, she became the first woman to chair the Committee—her portrait hangs in the Appropriations Committee room among those of former male chairs dating back to 1865.

Nita and Stephen Lowey have been married for over 60 years, have three grown children, and eight grandchildren.
