Academic Council
The Academic Council of the American Jewish Historical Society includes historians and scholars invited to serve by the Society’s Board of Trustees at the suggestion of the Council’s Nominating Committee. Academic Council members are professors and scholars who have demonstrated excellence in American Jewish history. More than one hundred historians, from universities in the United States, Europe and Israel are current members of the Academic Council.
The AJHS Academic Council promotes research and scholarship in American Jewish history. Members advise the Society’s staff and Trustees in matters pertaining to the Society’s holdings and its academic programs. The Academic Council awards the Society’s scholarly prizes and fellowships. It oversees, through an editorial board, the Society’s journal, American Jewish History, and, through a Publications Committee, the Society’s academic publications. The Academic Council’s Executive Committee, currently chaired by Professior Jeffrey S. Gurock of Yeshiva University, supervises the Society’s academic affairs.
